The Houses

Pamakanya is a breathtaking waterfront villa located near the village of Jaibalito on the north shore of Guatemala 's renowned Lake Atitlan. Pamakanya, which means "place of hot waters" in a local Mayan language, is named for the hot springs along the edge of the lake in this cove. This private retreat features three houses nestled into the lush landscape and is an architectural wonder built stone by stone over 15 years by local renowned architect, John Pennington. Casa Pamakanya is the ideal getaway spot for groups, small and large. We've hosted couples, small families, extended families, and groups. It is the perfect spot for a retreat, be it a yoga, meditation, women's, men's, art, cooking, photography or language study, a writers workshop, a family reunion or just a desire to learn about the Mayan culture. 

The property is peacefully secluded and only accessible by boat or by footpath from neighboring villages. The lake offers blissful swimming, kayaking and spectacular views. Above, paths ring the hilly coastline and you can easily hike to nearby Jaibalito or Santa Cruz for lunch or a massage appointment.

Climate 

Guatemala, known as 'the land of eternal spring,' enjoys balmy year-round climate, due to the tropical latitude combined with the high altitude (5000 feet at the Lake). The green season, generally characterized by late afternoon/evening showers, begins in late April or May, and runs on and off through September/October. The lake is tropical, but its high altitude makes for warm days (70-80F / 21-27C) and occasionally cool nights. No air conditioning or heating is necessary, although on cool nights a light fleece and the warm fire are welcome.

The  main house includes a large covered porch with a long dining table, hammock, couch and chairs, and a gorgeous view. The house sleeps 5-6 and serves as the primary kitchen and gathering area during your stay. The interior open layout includes a full kitchen, purified drinking water, living room, master bedroom, loft, full bath with both a tub and shower - and the best view you'll ever have from a bathroom - plus 4 fireplaces. 

The upper house is a large light-filled space which includes a stone patio and sitting area, open but divided sleeping area, large sink, coffee maker, purified drinking water, and a full bath with shower. The wide windows offer an incredible view of the lake. This house comfortably  sleeps 4-5.

The lower house ('la casita'), at lakeside, is a cozy studio, which sleeps 4-5, and has an full bathroom with an outdoor shower (accessible to all), large sink, coffee maker, purified drinking water and a large covered patio overlooking the water.
